HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 4, 2015 – High Point University invites the community to learn more about the selection of landscape art currently on exhibition at the university. Guest curator Richard Gantt will give a lecture on the works at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 18 in Norton Hall 101 to be followed by a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Sechrest Art Gallery of Hayworth Fine Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public; tickets are not required.
The “Sky Above Earth Below: Tradition and Transformation in Landscape” exhibition, on view through Oct. 10, features 18th, 19th and 20th-century landscape paintings, drawings and photographs from the High Point University Permanent Collection, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, private collector Randall Johnson and artist Nan Covert. The works explore the genre’s foundation in the Romantic Movement and subsequent departures and redefinitions in the Modern and Post-Modern periods.
As guest curator, Gantt, an art history professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, developed the direction of the exhibition and selected the works included.
“I could not have wished for a more rewarding experience than getting to work with the individuals and institutions contributing to this exhibition,” says Gantt. “We are showing some truly beautiful paintings that amplify the tradition of landscape and the many directions artists have since taken in the genre. Students and other members of the university community will find much to confirm their own pleasures in regarding landscape as art and discover some new directions to add to their interests.”
Gallery hours for the exhibition are 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Admission is free. Call 336-841-4680 for further information.
