HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 2, 2015 – High Point University will host a special program in recognition of Constitution Day at 7 p.m. on Sept. 16 in the David L. Francis Lecture Hall at Earl N. Phillips School of Business. The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.
The program is jointly sponsored by HPU, the Alexander Martin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the North Carolina Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard and the High Point Museum Guild. It will include a posting of the colors by NCSAR, dressed in 18th century uniforms, as well as a discussion moderated by Dr. Paul Ringel, associate professor of history.
Ringel specializes in the cultural and intellectual history of 19th century America. In 2015, he was named Service Learning Professor of the Year for leadership in the recording of the history of William Penn High School, High Point’s historic African-American school. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University, a Juris Doctor from Boston College, and a doctorate from Brandeis University.
Ringel will interview the program’s distinguished guest, former N.C. Chief Justice Burley B. Mitchell Jr. Mitchell graduated cum laude from North Carolina State University, earned his Juris Doctor
from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and attended the New York University School of Law and Institute of Judicial Administration. His career in public service began as assistant attorney general and continued as secretary of crime and public policy. He was appointed by Gov. James Hunt as the chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court from 1995 to 1999. He is a partner at Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice.
Visitors are encouraged to enter campus through the welcome center at the intersection of N. College Drive and Montlieu Avenue. Parking will be available behind Norton Hall and Wilson School of Commerce.
