HPU to Present Musical Comedy ‘Nunsense’

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 18, 2015 – High Point University’s Department of Theatre and Dance and the Department of Music will present “Nunsense” in the first production of the 2015-16 season. Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8-10 and Oct. 12-14 in The Empty Space Theatre.

“Nunsense,” a musical comedy with book, music and lyrics by Dan Goggin, is about the misadventures of five nuns trying to manage a fundraiser for their fellow sisters who are accidentally poisoned. The remaining nuns stage a talent show to raise money to bury their dearly departed. The show is the winner of four Outer Critics Circle Awards, including best off-Broadway musical in its original New York production.

“It’s a delightful, tuneful musical and one of the most popular and successful musicals of the last 25 years,” says Ed Simpson, chair of the HPU Department of Theatre and Dance. “It’s a great fit for our department – we have some terrifically talented singing and dancing actresses – and we believe the university and High Point communities will fall in love with this affectionate musical spoof. It’s simply great fun!”

The production stars senior Summer Kiesel as Reverend Mother, senior Cara Kramer as Sister Hubert, junior Heather Rossi as Sister Amnesia, junior Meredith Matsakis as Sister Leo and sophomore Shannon Howard as Sister Robert Anne. Doug Brown, assistant professor of theatre, is director. Lindsey Howie, instructor of dance, is choreographer, and music instructor Ben Blozen is music director for the show. Freshman Jason Wintz is the stage manager.

The HPU theatre program was recently named the No. 1 “underrated” theatre college in the Mid-Atlantic Region by OnStage for the quality of its faculty, students and productions as well as the overall theatre education provided to students.

Free tickets are available for the general public by contacting the HPU Box Office at Hayworth Fine Arts Center at 336-841-4673.
