HPU Welcomes New Assistant Professor of Athletic Training

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 4, 2015 – Erica Thornton, a professional with 19 years of experience, joins High Point University as assistant professor of athletic training.

As one of 41 new faculty members joining HPU, Thornton teaches a medical terminology class, musculoskeletal evaluation and rehabilitation classes, and clinical application courses in the Department of Athletic Training.

“I am thrilled to be joining a dynamic department at such a thriving university,” Thornton says. “The forward-thinking approach to interdisciplinary education is unmatched and will yield health care professionals that are equipped to handle the anticipated issues of the future.”

Thornton comes to HPU from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she served as head athletic trainer for the past six years. During her time at UNCG, she was named Preceptor of the Year in 2013 for her work with the Master of Science in Athletic Training program, and she was selected for the 2014 UNCG Leadership Institute. Her prior experience also includes serving as assistant and associate athletic trainer at UNCG and as assistant athletic trainer at Appalachian State University.

Thornton received a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from SUNY Brockport and a Master of Science in athletic training from the University of Florida. She is comprehensively certified in Pilates instruction by PhysicalMind Institute and is also Functional Movement System-Level 1 certified.
