Richard Krawiec to Discuss ‘Poetry in Communities’

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 16, 2015 – High Point University will welcome author Richard Krawiec to campus as part of the Faculty Cultural Enrichment Grant Series. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 1 in the Ballroom at Plato S. Wilson School of Commerce.

Along with reading from his collection of poetry, “Women Who Loved Me Despite,” Krawiec will speak about the relationship between poetry and social justice as part of HPU’s Common Experience theme of “Just Communities.”

Since 1983, Krawiec has offered training workshops on how to teach writing to children and adults at writer’s conferences, literacy centers, colleges and in the public schools. He teaches writing in community sites such as shelters, housing projects, women’s centers and prisons, including death row, as well as traditional educational institutions. He is also the founder of Jacar Press, a community active press that publishes poetry and contributes proceeds to fund workshops in underserved areas.

“We are honored to have Richard Krawiec at High Point University,” says Dr. Charmaine Cadeau, assistant professor of English. “His dexterity with writing across genres, his extensive editorial experience, and his commitment to fostering community within and beyond the poetry community in North Carolina is commendable.”

Krawiec’s expansive body of work includes three poetry collections, two novels, a story collection and four plays. He has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the North Carolina Arts Council and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
