Fall Family Weekend Brings 5,000 to HPU

HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 5, 2015 – High Point University welcomed nearly 5,000 guests to campus for Fall Family Weekend, an annual event that also brings visitors to the city and provides a boost to the local economy.

The weekend treated students and family members to performances by comedians, musicians and motivational speakers, faculty panels and lectures, a university update from HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein, student performances and worship services.

The university also held a grand opening ceremony and open house for Cottrell Hall, home to the Flanagan Center for Student Success. The new facility serves as a hub for professional development and was funded entirely by gifts from parents.

Guests also explored the city of High Point, bringing business to local hotels, retail shops, restaurants and more. Several hotels were completely booked, including the J.H. Adams Inn, which is full at least 10 weekends each year thanks to HPU events, generating more than $11,000 in room sales alone each weekend. Belk, Madcap Cottage and Omega Sports also held special shopping events for their families.

“Parents and students visiting High Point University are some of our favorite guests,” says K.J. Morgan, the inn’s director of corporate sales and marketing. “The JH Adams Inn has strong roots in High Point, and we want the city and the school to thrive. The comfort and service we provide visiting families is an extension of their time at the university. When they reserve rooms for future visits for the next four years, they become part of our inn family as well as the HPU family, and that’s a real win for everyone.”

The university will host an additional 1,600 guests for Alumni Weekend on Oct. 9-11. That event alone is expected to have more than a half million-dollar economic impact, according to the High Point Convention and Visitors Bureau. For the month of October, more than 8,000 visitors will come to campus for Fall Family Weekend, Alumni Weekend, Fall Open House and athletic events.
