HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 14, 2015 – High Point University students volunteer at the Community Writing Center throughout the year to work with students from Kirkman Park Elementary School on their reading and writing skills. This fall, Walmart is donating snacks to the children at the Community Writing Center to nourish their bodies as they nourish their mind.
“Providing nutritious snacks to these children in our community means so much to all of us here at Walmart,” says Steven Lowe, Walmart manager. “We partner with HPU in many ways, and this is yet another example of how that partnership gives back to the people in our city.”
Walmart is donating a variety of snacks on a weekly basis, including fresh fruit, granola bars and bottled water.
“The Community Writing Center is incredibly thankful for Walmart on N. Main Street generously providing snacks for the students,” says Shannon Barr, HPU alumna and AmeriCorps VISTA. “We are grateful for their support of the Community Writing Center and their continuous commitment and investment in our community’s youth.”

About the Community Writing Center:
Located at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, the Community Writing Center is staffed and operated by HPU students and faculty who promote literacy and offer tutoring to children in reading and writing in a welcoming environment.
The center is open Tuesday through Thursday and offers a program that uses creative writing and reading activities, followed by homework help for students. Participants illustrate stories they write, share their work with each other by reading it on stage, and play literacy games while practicing fundamental writing skills.
