HPU to Host World War I Experts for Rothenberg Seminar

HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 2, 2015 – High Point University will present its annual Gunther E. Rothenberg Seminar in Military History from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 7. The event will be held in the Greek Conference Center Ballroom and is open to the public.

Named for world-renowned military historian Gunther E. Rothenberg, the seminar is a tribute to his scholarship and dedication to the field of military history. The HPU Department of History sponsors the event, which offers a different theme each year and features a host of leading scholars discussing their most recent research and latest interpretations.

This year’s event will feature the theme, “The First World War.” Holger Herwig of the University of Calgary will share new interpretations on the Imperial German Army. John Gooch of the University of Leeds will speak on the Italian Army. Mark E. Grotelueschen of the U.S. Air Force Academy will address American contributions to the military victory on the western front. Michael Neiberg of the U.S. Army War College will cover the French Army after the mutinies of 1917.

“HPU students, faculty and guests from other universities will join us as we take a deeper look at one of the greatest political, economic and cultural turning points in modern history,” says Dr. Frederick Schneid, chair of the Department of History at HPU. “The seminar serves as a platform to advance and encourage the study of military history at HPU and beyond. We hope the community will join us for what promises to be an intriguing look at the First World War.”
