Upcoming Tango Concert at HPU Highlights Stories of Latino Women

HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 3, 2015 – The community is invited to join High Point University for a lively and heartfelt performance by Lorena Guillen Tango Ensemble. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on Nov. 17 in the Charles E. Hayworth Memorial Chapel and is open to the public. Tickets are not required.

The tango performance will take place in two parts. First, the group will share “The Other Side of My Heart,” a musical piece based on the real stories of a group of Latino women who immigrated to North Carolina. Bits of their own words, collected through various sessions with vocalist and artist Lorena Guillen, became the lyrics for five songs interlaced with their narrations. Second, the group will perform a selection of Argentine tango songs highlighting the role of women composers, lyricists and performers in solidifying the popularity of this style.

The Lorena Guillen Tango Ensemble is characterized by its “pan-Latin” new tango blend. The group has presented its music on both national and international stages.

Dr. Claudia Femenias, Spanish professor and organizer of the event, says a full house is expected.

“This program seeks to celebrate a group of local women who have left their home countries and strive to find and create a new community in their new home,” Femenias says. “I believe the HPU community will benefit by exploring and reflecting on the intersections between music, creative writing and social commitment.”
