Allen Joins School of Education

HIGH POINT, N.C., Dec. 1, 2015 – Dr. Tawannah G. Allen, an experienced educator, joined High Point University as an associate professor of educational leadership.

Allen teaches courses on intercultural communication skills, leadership development and human resources in the School of Education’s masters and doctoral programs. She also designs and facilitates professional development sessions for educators and supports students who are completing their dissertations.

“I plan to engage HPU’s doctoral candidates, who are the next generation of educational leaders, in valuable research and practice that will help them improve the performance of schools and districts across the nation,” says Allen, whose research focuses on academic success for underrepresented populations, strategies for preparing students for a hypercompetitive global economy and turnaround principles for low-performing schools.

Prior to joining HPU, Allen worked extensively in K-12 education, serving as a kindergarten teacher, speech-language pathologist and assistant principal for many years, and then holding administrative positions such as executive director of teacher recruitment, director of elementary education and professional development, and human resources administrator. She later served as an associate professor and doctoral program coordinator at Fayetteville State University.

Allen was appointed recently to a three-year term as executive board member of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administrators and is a member of the Bridges 2 Success Scholars’ Advisory Panel. She earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a Master of Education in communication disorders from North Carolina Central University. She also earned a Master of School Administration from Fayetteville State University and a doctorate in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
