HIGH POINT, N.C., Dec. 22, 2015 – The International Furniture Design Association recently honored High Point University senior Shelby Deskin as a “Rising Star.” The interior design major from Vestal, New York, received her award and presented some of her designs at the IFDA Carolinas Chapter Night of Luminaries event on Nov. 4 in High Point.
The Rising Star award recognizes a student from each of the 11 design programs at colleges across the Carolinas. These rising stars are nominated by faculty for being the top students and up-and-coming designers in their program.
Deskin presented four of her projects during the event – a wine shoppe design, a sustainable hostel design, an English restoration inspired rug and a Victor Horta inspired Quaker chapel. These designs were influenced heavily by the experiences she’s had in the School of Art and Design at HPU.
“Dr. Turpin’s ‘History of Art and Architecture’ class has been one of the most inspiring and my favorite,” Deskin says. “I loved learning about the development of each style and how different factors are capable of changing an entire aesthetic. As I studied abroad in Florence, Italy last semester, there were examples of historical styles surrounding me at all times. It amazed me how much I remembered from class and how absolutely incredible it was to finally see it in person.”
Deskin plans to work in retail or hospitality design after graduation. At HPU, she is a member of the Interior and Merchandising Design club, the student International Interior Design Association chapter and the honors scholars program.
