HPU to Feature Rebecca Todd Peters for 56th Annual Finch Lecture

HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 20, 2016 – High Point University will host Dr. Rebecca Todd Peters, professor of religious studies at Elon University, for the 56th Annual Charles Franklin Finch Lecture. The event will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 1 in the Charles E. Hayworth Memorial Chapel. It is free and open to the public; tickets are not required.

Peters will present “Solidarity in a Globalizing World,” examining how First World Christians can live with integrity in the midst of increasing inequality around the globe. In her latest book, “Solidarity Ethics: Transformation in a Globalized World,” Peters explains how a new world order marked by social justice and sustainability is possible.

“The economic crisis that has heralded the beginning of the 21st century requires new social narratives, new ways of being in the world, and a new ethic that offers us a pathway toward achieving that goal. An ethic of solidarity offers just such a pathway,” she says.

As a professor of religious studies, Peters’ work focuses particularly in the areas of environmental and economic justice and peace. She is involved in ecumenical work for the National Council of Churches in Christ and for the World Council of Churches. She is also the author of “In Search of the Good Life: The Ethics of Globalization” and co-editor of “Justice in a Global Economy: Strategies for Home, Community, and World.”

HPU’s Finch Lecture Series began in 1960, with Dean Liston Pope of Yale Divinity School as lecturer, in an effort to foster dialogue and to deepen understanding regarding issues of importance to communities of faith. Since the inaugural event, a distinguished line of clergy, humanitarians and scholars have visited the HPU campus each year.
