Communication Faculty, Students Win Award of Excellence for Original Film

HIGH POINT, N.C., March 10, 2016 – Jim Goodman, assistant professor of media production, and students from the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication at High Point University received the Award of Excellence in this year’s Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Festival of Media Arts. Their short film, “The One Per Cent,” was selected for one of the festival’s top awards in the category for faculty/student productions.

Goodman will accept the award during the BEA annual convention on April 18.

“The One Per Cent” tells the story of a poor waiter whose life is transformed when he receives an insulting, yet magical tip. Goodman produced and directed the 28-minute narrative film and guided his students through various aspects of production and post-production during his Senior Production Experience capstone course.

“Winning the BEA Festival of Media Arts 2016 Award of Excellence makes me very happy,” says Goodman. “This national honor for student-faculty collaboration is a reflection of the uniquely experiential learning environment provided by HPU and recognizes the hard work and dedication of our students. I am so pleased that we are honored in this way.”

Kelly Schwab and Michael Shield, 2015 HPU graduates, were student producers for the project. Ben Farmer and Michelle Gelbar, also 2015 graduates, shot and edited the film, respectively. Senior Ashley Angle wrote the original screenplay in Goodman’s Writing for Electronic Media course and worked with Shield on the shooting script for the production. The Senior Production Experience class and a number of other HPU students participated in the shoots as on-camera extras and additional crew, and helped with post-production.

The students’ work on the film emulated industry standards and gave them a taste for what it takes to work in the business, including the long hours outside of class spent on the project. Farmer, the film’s director of photography, who is now working as a marketing and video representative at Riverstreet Productions in Wilkesboro, says the experience gave him even more encouragement to pursue his career.

“I have always wanted to be involved with making films, and this one definitely reassured me that I want to do it even more,” says Farmer. “Being a part of this film gave me the opportunity to expand my knowledge and skills. I am grateful that we were able to win this award, and our entire crew most certainly deserves it.”

BEA is an international academic association for educators, students and professionals who are interested in teaching and research related to media production and the broadcasting business. The Festival of Media Arts is a refereed international exhibition of faculty creative activities and showcase of student work. Winning submissions are recognized during BEA’s annual convention, held in conjunction with the National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas.
