HIGH POINT, N.C., April 7, 2016 – High Point University student tutors attended the North Carolina Tutor/Supplemental Instruction Conference held at Eastern Carolina University in March.
The conference is designed to connect students across North Carolina campuses that serve in roles such as a peer tutor, supplemental instruction or mentor. It provided the opportunity for professional development and to learn valuable tutoring skills that were brought back to HPU’s campus.
“Through participating in this conference, I realized how learning new skills helps the students I work with reinforce understanding information and concepts learned in the classroom,” said Joshua Baulch, HPU student and tutor.
At the conference, eight HPU students presented their experiences as leaders in the HPU tutoring program. The HPU Office of Academic Services provides tutorial support for students in a wide range of courses. Academic Services is a Level III CRLA Certified Tutor Training Program.
“The conference was a fun and engaging experience that not only allowed us to build on our tutoring skills, but to also meet other tutors from different schools in North Carolina,” said Natalie Jacobsen, HPU student and tutor. “Hearing about tutoring techniques and experiences from others was very beneficial and interesting.”
