HPU Kicks Off ‘Stamp Out Hunger Drive’ with 2,000 Pounds of Food

HIGH POINT, N.C., May 9, 2016 – High Point University students, faculty and staff kick-started the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive today with more than 2,000 pounds of nonperishable items.

It’s a longstanding tradition for the HPU family to collect dozens of boxes filled with food just before the spring semester ends, all to support the United Way of Greater High Point and the U.S. Postal Service’s efforts to stock local food pantry shelves through the summer.

“It comes at a perfect time of the year because food banks are always running low during the summer,” says UWGHP President Bobby Smith. “People often don’t think of hunger issues until the holidays roll around. What HPU has done for years is be the biggest donor to this drive, and it goes a long way in the next four months.”

Now that the drive has begun, High Point postal workers will travel to businesses throughout the city to pick up donations, and city residents can participate by leaving a bag of nonperishable food by their mailboxes on May 14.

“It’s overwhelming the response from the students, and it means a lot to the community,” said Beverly Woodburn, a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. “This drive supports 13 local food pantries, so this is a big deal.”
