Students Explore Europe During Global Business ‘Maymester’

HIGH POINT, N.C., May 26, 2016 – High Point University students embarked on a journey to London, Luxembourg, Amsterdam and Berlin as a part of their “Global Business Maymester” course.

The students explored key developments in the world regarding the globalization of people, markets and firms. They enhanced their ability to assess the geopolitical and political-economy landscape of global and regional issues. Students also learned how to analyze newsworthy global events and understand how events and issues are shaped by unique geographic, historic, political, economic, social and cultural contexts.

“It was a pleasure teaching this course to HPU students,” said Dr. Tjai Nielsen, associate professor of management and director of executive education at HPU. “There are few businesses that are not impacted by globalization. The opportunity to integrate this type of course with immersion in four major business hubs in Western Europe is a rare educational opportunity. Experiencing global business first-hand enhances the impact of the course.”

The students visited a variety of places such as the Bank of England, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club that hosts Wimbledon, Volkswagen, Heineken and the stock exchange in Amsterdam, to name a few.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to take the ‘Global Business’ course,” said HPU student Claudia Holland. “Not only did I have the chance to learn how business works abroad, but I was able to see it first-hand as I traveled and put into practice what we learned in the classroom. This course has taught me to value other cultures not only in life but in the business world. The class has played a significant role in my academic career and I hope to one day have the chance to travel abroad for my career.”
