HIGH POINT, N.C., July 1, 2016 – High Point University is contributing funds and bottled water to families affected by flooding in West Virginia.
HPU’s Student Government Association is donating $2,000 to the American Red Cross to aid families in the southern portion of the state that’s been severely damaged in the last week.
The university also contributed 50 cases of water, or just over 1,000 pounds, to a supply drive organized by Richard Childress Racing. RCR will take several trucks filled with the water to Greenbrier County, West Virginia, early next week, and donate the supplies through Samaritan’s Purse.
“We have a lot of interns from HPU at RCR, and several of our employees are HPU graduates,” says Richard Payne, chaplain at RCR. “The university always steps forward when there’s a need.”
Rachel Callaway, HPU’s SGA president and rising senior, said the organization’s gift is made in support of all families impacted by the flooding, and also HPU students who hail from West Virginia.
“Many students in our High Point family call West Virginia home,” says Callaway. “When the news of the floods was brought to our attention, the SGA Executive Council wanted to help. It was an easy decision for us to donate to the American Red Cross. As the Student Government Association, we are proud to help this organization as they work on the front lines providing relief for those who have suffered from the flooding. We are keeping those affected by these events in our thoughts and prayers.”
