Student Explores the Business of Athletic Training at Cheer 360 Internship

HIGH POINT, N.C., July 12, 2016 – A lot of hard work goes into running a coaching program for athletes, both from the training and business perspectives. High Point University rising senior Sabrina Gouldsbury is combining her strengths in both areas while working at her summer internship with Cheer 360 in Bohemia, New York.

Gouldsbury, a Nissequogue, New York native, is working as a training assistant at the gym, which offers coaching programs designed to get cheerleaders into peak mental and physical shape.

She shadows classes to gain a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities associated with mental and physical strength training. With the help of the gym’s owners and staff, Gouldsbury creates her own workouts and challenges for the cheerleaders. She also works in the customer service and sales departments, gaining a better understanding of what it’s like to manage a business.

“I’m learning first-hand inside the gym with the athletes, but I’m also learning in the office,” says Gouldsbury. “I’m discovering what it takes to run a successful and growing business.”

She says the things she has learned at HPU have regularly come in handy while working with the athletes and staff.

“With HPU’s way of holistic learning, I have been able to take knowledge that I learned in my exercise science classes and my social science classes and combine it to best communicate with the kids and parents here,” she says.

The opportunity to work with young athletes excites Gouldsbury, who is an exercise science major with a concentration in health and wellness. She plans to attend graduate school for occupational therapy with a focus in pediatrics.
