Student Gains HR Experience at Amazon

HIGH POINT, N.C., Aug. 11, 2016 – High Point University senior Tricia Regius is exploring the field of human resources through her summer internship with Amazon.

Regius, a Farmington, Connecticut, native and human relations major, is one of the online retailer’s human resource assistant interns at its Phoenix fulfillment center. She has a variety of responsibilities dealing with employee relations, including internal transfers, planning leaves of absence and vacation time, conflict management and reviewing associate feedback.

One of the unique opportunities Regius has at Amazon is working as part of the Site Optimization team, a group that includes numerous human resources representatives and interns across the country. The goal of the team and its project is to reduce burden in human resources processes, hopefully saving a total of 350,000 hours in 2017.

Regius landed her internship by taking advantage of the various professional resources offered through HPU’s Career and Internship Services.

“I have been extremely proactive about taking advantage of HPU’s career services by frequently using them to update my resume, LinkedIn and cover letter,” she says.

Regius also received support and advice from Professor David Bergen, head of HPU’s human relations department, throughout Amazonher application process.

“Being proactive gave me all the tools I needed to be prepared when it came time to apply for this internship,” Regius says. “My human relations courses are what really set me up for success with the actual internship and gave me wide array of knowledge to be able to take on any challenge I have been given.”

Regius hopes to obtain a leadership role in human resources, specializing in talent development or organization effectiveness.
