Oxford Historian to Speak at HPU

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 1, 2016 – The Department of History at High Point University will host Professor Peter Wilson, Chichele Professor of the History of War at the University of Oxford, for a lecture titled “The European Fiscal-Military System 1580-1850: or making war with resources you don’t have.” The lecture will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. on Sept. 14 in Phillips Hall room 120 and is open to the public. No tickets are required.

Along with his professorship, Wilson is a Fellow of All Souls College, a research oriented constituent college of the University of Oxford. He has also previously worked at the universities of Hull, Newcastle and Sunderland and has been a visiting fellow at the University of Münster, Germany.

This is Wilson’s fourth visit to HPU. He came to the university in 2004 and 2009 and was a visiting scholar in the summer of 2011. In 2004, HPU was the first university to invite him to the U.S.

“HPU students, faculty and guests will be treated to a lecture by one of the leading historians in the world,” says Dr. Frederick Schneid, chair of the Department of History. “Professor Wilson’s work over the past 30 years has significantly reshaped our understanding of European history.

“Indeed, his presentation will explore the intersection of war, economy and politics; a subject that resonates today. The History Department regularly invites international scholars to the university as part of its mission, to engage students in the critical study of the past, providing access to a far wider range of human experience than any individual could acquire in a single lifetime, making history essential to a liberal arts education.”

A reception will precede the lecture.
