HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 3, 2016 – High Point University junior Nicholas Muniz, a business major from Fort Worth, Texas, combined his passion for sports with preparation for his future career during an internship in baseball operations with the Staten Island Yankees.
While assisting the team’s general manager, Muniz was in charge of all communication between the players, coaching staff and front office. He also managed roster changes for the team, reported them to Major League Baseball Advanced Media and organized media interviews for players and coaches.
During games, Muniz operated the MLB Stringer software for the MILB First Pitch app, which allows fans to follow the game on their electronic devices. He also served as a substitute official scorer.
“Being an avid sports fan, it truly was a remarkable experience going to a ballpark everyday and interacting with the players and the coaching staff of a professional organization to help make their jobs easier and the team more successful,” he says.
Muniz credits much of his success to the communication skills he’s learned at HPU as well as the constant support he’s received from Akir Khan, his student success coach.
“Akir helped me prepare for the interview process and kept in touch with me during my internship,” Muniz says. “He made sure I was staying on task and gave me recommendations on how to get the most of my time there.”
Muniz, who is also studying sport management at HPU, knows his internship was a special opportunity to gain real world, hands-on experience – one that will help him prepare for the future.
“Gaining experience in the sports industry is something that will help me this year at HPU, but also the ability to be flexible and adapt to changing situations,” he says. “I’ve learned that things can change by the second, and you have to be ready to think on your feet and tackle any unexpected challenges thrown your way.”
