High Point Mayor Visits HPU to Proclaim PA Week

HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 7, 2016 – For the second year in a row, High Point Mayor Bill Bencini visited High Point University’s Department of Physician Assistant Studies to proclaim PA Week, which is recognized nationally each year from Oct. 6-12.

“You don’t know how fortunate we feel to have so many bright young people here at this university,” Bencini said before he signed the proclamation. “I came here last year, and it was a big surprise to me to learn what this program is all about and just how much the students are doing. I’m thrilled about the service that you students are involved in. That’s one of the real foundational elements of High Point University is to remind the students you have been blessed with educational opportunities, and when you get to a certain place in your professional career, always remember to step back, stay engaged and give to others.”

A commitment to service has been a big part of the program, which now has two cohorts of students. Alexandra Louk, a first-year student, said that she and her peers have dedicated themselves to offering free blood pressure checks at several events and raising funds for Treadwell Society to prevent and treat lung cancer. They also plan to volunteer in the pumpkin patch at Archdale United Methodist Church and participate in the LUNGe Forward 5k in Greensboro.

Niall Moreira, a first-year PA student and a native of High Point, said the students feel welcomed by the city.

Students gathered to celebrate PA week on campus today.

“As students, we are so glad to call High Point our home and we look forward to learning and growing in a place that has embraced the PA profession,” Moreira said. “It’s clear to us how strongly this community has embraced our profession and our program.”

Bencini also encouraged the students to stay in High Point after graduation.

“I would encourage as many of you as possible to stay in High Point,” Bencini said. “High Point is in the process of doing some transformational things. We are in the early stages of making High Point more attractive to young people like yourselves, and you’re an important part of this city.”
