HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 6, 2016 – High Point University has appointed 10 new members to its Board of Visitors. The board is composed of approximately 144 friends of HPU who are recognized for their character and leadership abilities.
“We appreciate all the ways these individuals have contributed their leadership and service to High Point University and the greater community,” says Dr. Nido R. Qubein, university president. “HPU deeply values their continued support, as we are proud to have them represent the university and serve as an inspiration to our students.”
The recently appointed members are as follows:
Dr. Lane Anderson
Anderson is a marriage and family therapist, school consultant and award-winning educator. He has more than 33 years of experience as a teacher, coach and administrator in K-12 schools. He also served for four years on active duty in the U.S. Navy as well as 21 years in the naval reserve intelligence program, retiring with the rank of captain. In addition to consulting for schools, he offers counseling through the Anderson Center for Marriage & Family Therapy Services in Mebane. Anderson is a board certified clinical member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and the American Psychological Association. He has been in private practice for more than 20 years and has published two books, “Care Enough to Discipline: Raising Children for the 21st Century” and “Answers to Questions About Life, Livin’ & Lovin’.”
“I have been a life-long educator interested in the best ways we can continue to offer the best curriculum and teaching to connect every citizen’s potential to relevant courses which culminate in a productive meaningful life both personally and economically,” he says.
Charles Cain
Cain is an attorney and civic leader in High Point, and is currently serving as General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer of PL Developments, the nation’s second-largest packager and distributor of over-the-counter pharmaceutical products. He and his wife, Ann, have three daughters, Olivia, Claire and Charlotte.
“High Point University has become the chief catalyst for growth in my hometown and provided a solid foundation of excellence for my oldest daughter, who is an HPU graduate,” he says. “I am very proud to serve on its Board of Visitors.”
Patrick Chapin
Chapin recently accepted the role as President and CEO of Business High Point Inc. and the High Point Chamber of Commerce. He comes to the local community with extensive leadership experience in the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors, including 10 years with the Walt Disney Company and five years as executive director of the Sarasota Family YMCA. He has served the last seven years as President and CEO of the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce in Central Florida, where he was widely recognized as a consensus builder and collaborator.
“When I announced I was moving to High Point, the two things people would immediately say were, ‘Wow, the furniture capital of the world,’ and ‘High Point University is unbelievable,’” he says. “I’m thrilled to be welcomed into the HPU family.”

Dr. Barry Cheek
Cheek, a native of Greensboro, has practiced cardiology for 27 years in High Point, where he lives with his wife, Lisa, and four children. With the establishment of the Congdon School of Health Sciences, he is also involved in the training of HPU’s physician assistant students.
“High Point has been a wonderful place to practice medicine, surrounded by highly skilled colleagues within an outstanding hospital,” he says. “I have observed with pride and amazement the evolution of HPU into a burgeoning university, growing each day in national stature while simultaneously expanding its service mission to our local community.”
John Conrad
It has been Conrad’s passion for almost 46 years to combine marketing talent and manufacturing know-how into creating complete furniture concepts – driven from their inception by a targeted marketing direction and story. Over his career, he has served as president of Brandt Cabinet Works, general manager of Lübke International, national marketing manager for Cartwright, director of contract furnishings for The Lane Company, senior vice-president of merchandising at The Powell Company and CEO of Conrad Companies LLC, designing and developing numerous products and collections. He has worked with manufacturers in over 17 countries during his career. He currently serves as executive director of the American Society of Furniture Designers after having served as its president and vice president. A past Pinnacle™ Award winner, he is also the moderator of ASFD’s podcast, “Design Between the Lines.” He holds degrees from both the University of Southern California and North Carolina State University and is a voting member of several ASTM furniture product standards committees.
“I have chosen to become a member of the Board of Visitors to take another step in my commitment to High Point’s University and its vision for the future, and to add what I can to the vigor of this growing, vibrant institution,” he says.
Dr. Chip Duckett
Duckett is currently a pediatric urologist with UNC Regional Physicians. He is also heavily involved in the cycling community as a team owner, shop owner, race promoter and nationally ranked Masters Cyclocross racer. He founded the High Point Cycling Classic and successfully brought the USA Cycling Professional Criterium Championships to High Point. He earned his bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981. He has served two terms on the university’s Board of Visitors and is currently serving on the Honors Advisory Board for Honors Carolina. He attended medical school at Wake Forest University and completed his urology residency training at the University of Kentucky.
“My interest in serving on the HPU Board of Visitors centers around High Point University’s continued growth and leadership role in higher education in the U.S. and in the university’s increasing significance to the long-term development of the city of High Point,” he says. “I look forward to being a part of, and helping to further, this legacy.”
Rick Lewis
Lewis is chairman of WinterBell Company, paper and packaging specialists. He has served as chairman of the board for High Point Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Board of Trustees for High Point Regional Health System, High Point corporate chairman for the United Way campaign, a Paul Harris Fellow of the Board of Directors for High Point Rotary Club, and a member of the High Point Economic Development Board. He was also the High Point Chamber’s Small Business Person of the Year. A U.S. Army veteran, he is a 1969 graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill. He has served as vestry and stewardship chairman and president of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew men’s group at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. He and his wife, Margaret, have two children and four grandchildren.

Dave Riedlinger
Riedlinger has lived in High Point for more than 35 years. For a majority of his career, he has been involved in construction and real estate development, including his signature development, Time Square. He graduated from Duke University in 1986 with a Master of Business Administration.
“As a business owner, I have watched HPU grow and witnessed first-hand how the university has impacted us locally and across the country,” he says. “I am pleased to be selected to serve on the Board of Visitors and look forward to being an ambassador for the university.”
Chief Kenneth Shultz
Shultz has been a sworn officer with the High Point Police Department for more than 27 years. After serving in multiple capacities throughout his tenure, he was selected as chief in April 2016. He now continues the innovative approaches the High Point Police Department is known for as it works to target violent crime and keep High Point as safe as possible. Shultz was born in High Point and grew up in Davidson County. After graduating from Ledford High School, he joined the Army Reserve and was a member of the 11th Special Forces Group (Airborne). While working at the police department, he completed a six-year enlistment with the Army Reserves, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6). Shultz received a bachelor’s degree from Laurel University in management and ethics. He has also received professional training through the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and the Senior Executives in State and Local Government course offered as part of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Executive Education Program in Boston. He is married to his wife, Kimberly, who works for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as an industry operations investigator.
“The opportunity to participate on High Point University’s Board of Visitors is a great example of community partners working together for the good of High Point, and I look forward to contributing my efforts toward the success of the university and the city,” he says.
Mike Smith
Smith, a credentialed and accredited financial consultant, underwriter and estate planner, serves clients in High Point through Sterling Financial Inc., which he founded in 1986. He was a CPA with Coopers & Lybrand prior to moving to High Point in 1978. He is also a decorated combat veteran who served his country in Vietnam.
“I have been an unofficial ambassador for HPU when visiting other parts of our country and look forward to serving the university in an official capacity,” he says. “Attending sporting events at HPU has given me an appreciation of the students, and our city is fortunate to have them and our extraordinary university.”
