HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 7, 2016 – High Point University will host a Veterans Day Celebration at 8 a.m. on Nov. 11 in the Millis Center to honor hundreds of men and women who’ve served their country. Both community volunteers interested in contributing and veterans interested in attending can RSVP now at www.highpoint.edu/veteransday.
A complimentary breakfast will be served to all veterans as they hear from an impressive lineup of speakers, including Celia Sandys, granddaughter of Winston Churchill; MG Kevin G. O’Connell, former Commanding General in the U.S. Army and a 1982 alumnus; Jeff Golden, City of High Point Ward I Councilman and Persian Gulf War Veteran; and Dr. Nido Qubein, HPU president.
The North Carolina Brass Band and the HPU Chamber Singers will also perform, and volunteers will unveil a patriotic salute at the finale. HPU students who raised $26,000 to purchase a track chair for a North Carolina veteran through the Independence Fund this past spring will also share their passion for serving veterans at the event.
Attendees will park at Oak Hollow Mall. Shuttles for volunteers, who are asked to arrive early, will begin running at 6:30 a.m. Shuttles for veterans will begin running at 7:15 a.m.
“High Point University is a God, family and country school,” says Dr. Nido Qubein, HPU president. “We are delighted to honor the brave people who have secured for us the freedoms and liberties that we enjoy every day.”
The event has grown over the years from honoring veterans from a local retirement home to this year’s large-scale celebration.
“For many years, our students have honored local veterans, and we proudly display American flags throughout our campus,” Qubein adds. “As High Point’s University, it’s fitting that our celebration continues to grow in scale along with our campus and involvement in the community as an anchor institution.”
The event is supported and sponsored by River Landing at Sandy Ridge, Samet Corporation, Ilderton Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram, and Merrill Lynch/The Tilley Group/Tilley-Higgins Donor Advised Fund.
