HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 31, 2016 – High Point University senior Tyler Bailey recently completed an internship with IBM in Austin, Texas. There, he worked on a team of global software engineers responsible for innovating and building IBM’s leadership in the cloud computing market, one of the company’s most important investments.
A computer science major from Annapolis, Maryland, Bailey’s work was used by the IBM product teams to generate sales for customers around the world. He says this experience allowed him to strengthen his research, testing and software development skills.
“I loved how IBM made me feel like an employee from day one,” he says. “I was given a task and my team relied on me to complete it during the summer. I was brought in for a purpose, which was to develop important code for the company.”
During his internship, Bailey was able to observe how software developers collaborate with other teams to accomplish tasks. He spent the mornings brainstorming and afternoons developing software codes with his fellow interns. He gained the experience of working with hundreds of people to complete all kinds of tasks.
Bailey felt prepared for his internship because of the courses he’s completed at HPU with computer science professors Roger Shore and Scott Russell.
“My role within IBM required me to perform various complicated tasks, some of which I knew and others I had to learn through research,” says Bailey. “The computer science courses at High Point University gave me the skills and knowledge I needed to be prepared for the internship with IBM.
“I am very blessed to have had this opportunity to take my HPU computer science education and apply it to a real world environment.”
