HPU Announces New Hires

HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 2, 2016 – High Point University welcomed five new faculty and staff members during the month of October. They are as follows:

 

simon-alex-marshallDr. S. Alex Marshall joins the Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy as an assistant professor of basic pharmaceutical sciences. This is a newly created faculty position. He will be teaching immunology and pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics courses and continuing his research on the impact of alcohol on the brain with a particular focus on the neuroimmune system. Marshall most recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship that allowed him to teach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University and North Carolina Central University. He has won several awards for his research, service and teaching. He holds a bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of Florida as well as a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences and graduate certificate in college teaching and learning from the University of Kentucky.

 

jeremiah-underwoodJeremiah Underwood joins the Department of Physician Assistant Studies as a simulation technology specialist. This is a newly created position in the School of Health Sciences. He is overseeing the department’s Simulation Laboratory and assisting faculty with designing simulation experiences, overseeing students during exercises, and other management tasks. In this role, he is creating innovative approaches to medical simulation technology to maximize physician assistant students’ learning experiences. He has 15 years of experience in pre-hospital emergency medicine, most recently as the training officer for Stokes County Emergency Services. He also serves as an American Heart Association instructor and faculty member teaching Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Life Support. He holds a bachelor’s degree in emergency management, an associate degree in emergency medical science, and is credentialed as an NC EMT-Paramedic, Critical Care Paramedic and Level II Paramedic Instructor.

 

derek-brandonDerek Brandon joins the Office of Information Technology as manager of business solution services. He is responsible for business analysis, business process improvement and project management to improve IT services throughout the university. He comes to HPU with more than 20 years of IT program and project management experience. His previous roles have included leading e-business and corporate projects with Fortune 500 companies, working within higher education and maintaining relationships between businesses and clients. He holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology/electronics and a master’s degree in information technology. He also has Six Sigma Quality Certification.

Carl Leist joins the Office of Student Life as a resident director. He supervises the residential staff and all residents living in the Village 1 and Aldridge Village residence halls, ensuring these facilities are safe and welcoming for students. Leist will use his prior experience in university alumni, family and student affairs to create an environment where students can thrive academically, professionally and socially. He holds a bachelor’s degree in communication studies and a master’s degree in education.

Jordan Deeter joins the Office of Information Technology as a computing support analyst. He provides technology support to students and helps resolve issues with electronics in a friendly, professional and timely manner. He has prior experience troubleshooting computer and electrical issues and is currently pursuing a degree in web technologies and networking.
