HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 7, 2016 – High Point University’s School of Education was transformed into a Lego Learning Lab over the weekend. Over 800 local children and parents enjoyed engineering competitions, machine building, robotics and Lego storytelling.

This free annual event provides an opportunity for children in kindergarten through eighth grade to experience STEM engineering by working with Legos. In addition to bolstering STEM lessons, the activities promoted teamwork and communication among children.

While children learned in groups, parents also had the opportunity to attend workshops designed to illustrate the value of using Legos to help their children learn essential vocabulary and math skills.

Dr. Shirley Disseler, associate professor of education at HPU, said the Showcase was a success filled with community members, HPU students, food and numerous activities.

“To see the look of engagement in the eyes of the children reminds us why we choose to host events like this one,” says Disseler. “One child said, ‘Dr. Disseler, can I just skip elementary school and come here to learn about math and reading?’ Our education majors are taking all that they are learning and seeing it in action here!”

HPU’s Lego Showcase is just one of the multiple Lego events held by the School of Education throughout the year. Other events include the Come Build With Us field trip, STEM Summer Camp and the spring Lego Showcase.
