HPU Announces Academic and Professional Achievements

HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 16, 2017 – High Point University faculty, staff and students recently received the following academic and professional awards and recognitions.

Two HPU Students Named Fulbright Semifinalists

Liz Reichart
Catherine Bakewell

HPU seniors Liz Reichart and Catherine Bakewell are semifinalists for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Fulbright offers opportunities for students to undertake graduate study, advanced research or teaching abroad in more than 140 countries worldwide. Reichart, an international business and graphic design major from Hudson, Ohio, is pursuing a research award to study the economics of renewable energy in Germany. Bakewell, a Spanish major from St. Louis, has applied for an English Teaching Assistantship award to teach English in Spain.

“For Liz and Catherine, winning a Fulbright award would be life-changing,” says Dr. Meredith Malburne-Wade, director of the Office of Fellowships and Awards. “They would both make excellent ambassadors for the United States and for High Point University, demonstrating their strength, knowledge, passion and kindness while living and working abroad. We are incredibly proud of them for reaching the semifinals of such a competitive program.”

Psychology Professor Named to ‘40 Leaders Under 40’

Dr. Sadie Leder Elder, assistant professor of psychology at HPU, was selected as one of the “40 Leaders Under 40” by the Triad Business Journal. She received the award at a luncheon on Feb. 16. As a professor, Elder serves as a mentor to HPU students, filling the role of teacher while also preparing students for the world as it is going to be.

“It is a privilege to be recognized for my leadership and community involvement,” says Elder. “My time at High Point University has given me a platform to hone and share my passion for mentoring and service. I aspire to be a role model for my students and am honored by this acknowledgement for the work that I am doing in the greater High Point community.”

Music Faculty Member to Perform with North Carolina Symphony

Dr. Scott MacLeod, assistant professor of voice, will perform as soloist with the North Carolina Symphony during its Feb. 24 concert. The symphony will present Ives Symphony No. 2 at noon at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh. MacLeod has appeared as a soloist in a variety of regional venues, including North Carolina’s Greensboro Opera, Piedmont Opera and Eastern Music Festival, as well as national and international venues such as the National Symphony of Costa Rica and Carnegie Hall. At HPU, he provides individual voice training, teaches opera and musical theatre techniques, and serves as music director for HPU opera and musical theatre productions.

“North Carolina is a great place to be a musician,” says MacLeod. “There are a lot of great organizations that produce fantastic works. I’m grateful for performing opportunities like this, and to teach at a university that supports and promotes the arts.”

Spanish Professor Wins Book Award

Dr. Hayden Carron, associate professor and director of Spanish at HPU, won first prize for his novel, “Nada Humano Me Es Ajeno” (“Nothing Human Is Strange to Me”) from the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development. As one of the main literary institutions in the Dominican Republic, the foundation awards the prize every two years. It includes a substantial monetary allotment, the publishing of the first edition of the book, plus readings and events in several Latin American countries. Carron will accept the honor at an awards ceremony in March in the Dominican Republic and his book is expected to be released later this year.

“As a Dominican-American writer, it is a great honor to have my first novel awarded with such a distinguished prize,” says Carron.

Security Chief Appointed to Two Councils

Jeff Karpovich, CPP, CHPA chief of security and transportation at HPU, was recently appointed to two councils of the American Society for Industrial Security International, an organization of security professionals worldwide. Karpovich will chair the School Security Liaison Committee for the Law Enforcement Liaison Council. He also was appointed to the ASIS School Safety and Security Council.

“My contribution to these respected councils is a nod to the success of the HPU security program and bolsters our national reputation of quality,” says Karpovich. “It’s gratifying to know my industry peers value this experience and knowledge.”
