HIGH POINT, N.C., March 29, 2017 – The Community Writing Center, a partnership between High Point University and Mt. Zion Baptist Church, received a donation of $2,000 from High Point Elks Lodge. The gift will help to cover costs of the center’s programming and materials, as well as transportation and snacks for the children it serves.
Members of the Elks Lodge presented the check to Pastor Frank Thomas of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and HPU faculty and volunteers on March 21.
“High Point Elks Lodge #1155 is glad to partner with High Point University and Mt. Zion Baptist Church in their efforts to positively impact our community through the creative writing program,” says Britt Moore, Elks Lodge member. “I am glad to present this check to the staff and volunteers from HPU. I know it will be used to continue the good of this organization.”
The Community Writing Center is an after-school program that engages children from Kirkman Park Elementary and Penn-Griffin School for the Arts in reading and writing projects. HPU students involved in service learning work closely with the children through creative writing practices, interactive exercises and homework assistance. The program is co-directed by Dr. Cara Kozma and Dr. Charmaine Cadeau, both assistant professors of English at HPU.
“I volunteer at the Community Writing Center once a week,” says Rebecca Sands, HPU sophomore. “The CWC gives the kids a place to go after school to do homework and work on their reading and writing skills with HPU students. The donation from the Elks will help to keep this program going.”
