MLB Selects HPU Student to Create Designs for All-Star Game

HIGH POINT, N.C., July 10, 2017 – Graphic illustrations created by a High Point University rising senior will be prominently displayed inside Marlins Park and the surrounding city of Miami during this week’s 2017 Home Run Derby and MLB All-Star Game.

Paul Green, a graphic design major from Stonegate, Colorado, is a creative intern for Major League Baseball in New York and is spending his summer designing content for major events, including the All-Star Game, baseball playoffs and the World Series.

While he won’t be attending the game, Green will be watching for his finished products when the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game air on television Monday and Tuesday. He helped create the graphics placed on top of the dugouts in the stadium as well as other interior branding pieces. His work is also featured on posters and banners at the Miami airport and throughout the city.

“It will be a surreal feeling whenever the event broadcast zooms to the high home view over Marlins Park and my designs will be shown to an international audience,” says Green. “My work will really come full circle the day of the events. Having signage placed for hundreds of thousands of people to see gives me a first taste of professional accomplishment and the itch to work harder.”

With aspirations of a career in the sports or entertainment industries, Green is gaining experience working as a designer in a highly competitive, fast-paced environment. He participates in weekly design meetings with senior designers and creative directors, art critiques for upcoming logo designs or style guides, and theme creation for special events.

“Receiving the opportunity to intern in professional sports has been the greatest 10-week experience in my life,” Green says. “This summer is preparing me for the structures of the corporate design world, networking and how to recognize design trends and apply them to my work. I’ve gained an understanding of the research process in design and how to create a brand that is consistent and connects with the fans.”

Green’s fraternity brothers in Pi Kappa Phi helped him find the internship and encouraged him to apply. He worked with Elizabeth Walker Illig, career advisor at HPU, to prepare his resume to stand out in the large pool of applicants and practice for the interview. His courses in HPU’s School of Art and Design also provided him with visible growth in his skills as a designer.

“HPU builds an environment in which I have never been nervous to fail,” he says. “I’ve been surrounded by so many people who have impeccable drive to achieve their individual goals and encourage their network to strive to outperform theirs as well.”
