Senior Interns with Two NFL Teams

HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 27, 2017 – High Point University senior Connor Whicker spent the summer preparing NFL players for the big games coming up this season while serving as an athletic training intern for two professional teams.

While working with the Miami Dolphins, Whicker assisted in pre- and post-practice evaluations and treatments, including helping rehabilitate players from injuries. He also provided first aid care, helped the team prepare for away games and ensured players were well hydrated on the field and on the sideline during the team’s preseason games.

The Huntersville native and HPU athletic training major also worked with the Carolina Panthers for a second summer, filling similar roles during organized team activities and mini camps in June.

“These internships have been incredible in helping me grow as an athletic training student and providing me with experiences that will help me reach my goal of working as an athletic trainer in the National Football League,” says Whicker.

With both internships, Whicker felt confident in providing quality care to the teams because of the preparation he’s received at HPU.

“The internships have allowed me to apply the information I’ve been learning in class and during my clinical rotations so I can become the health care professional I strive to be on a daily basis,” he says.

Whicker also says mentorship from Dr. Steve Dischiavi, associate professor of physical therapy, Dr. Yum Nguyen, associate professor of athletic training, and other athletic training faculty has played a key role in his growth.

“My professors have constantly challenged me academically and have used their knowledge and numerous years of experience to help me reach my career goal,” says Whicker. “They’ve supported my learning in the classroom, but they’ve also encouraged me to explore undergraduate research and prepared me to successfully present my research at national conferences, helping me grow professionally.”
