HPU Embraces the Joy of Christmas at Lessons and Carols

HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 30, 2017 –The light of nearly 350 candles held by members of the High Point University community filled Hayworth Chapel on Nov. 29th  during the “Lessons and Carols” Candlelight Service. The annual event is a special time of sharing the Christmas story through readings and songs.

Based on the traditional Festival of Lessons and Carols at King’s College in Cambridge, England, the service featured members of the university community, including the Chapel Choir, directed by Dr. Elizabeth Doebler, and the Flute Ensemble, directed by Dr. Laura Stevens. The Board of Stewards of Hayworth Chapel served as ushers and greeters.

Students, faculty, staff and residents of High Point delivered readings from scripture between the singing of carols throughout the evening. Several members of the Chapel Choir took turns leading the congregation in the carols.

“It is a profound service where we simply let scripture and song bring to life the Christmas message of the Prince of Peace, the one brings light into our lives – a light that shines in the darkness and the darkness does not overcome it,” said Rev. Preston Davis, minister to the university. “I’m so very proud of the student leaders. Amid their hectic college schedules and responsibilities at semester’s end, they bring us to the heart of the season.”
