How HPU helped you get there: “During my time at HPU, I took two courses that shaped the career path I wanted to enter. The first was Free Market Economics course with Dr. Stephanie Crofton, professor of economics, and the second was Women’s Writing Worldwide with Dr. Melissa Richard, instructor of English. After taking these two classes, I realized that I have a passion for learning about free market economics as well as women’s issues globally. I also became interested in women’s health care policy and topics.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Dr. Crofton is my most impactful mentor at HPU. I have known her since my freshman year, and she has offered me support and advice every step of the way. Dr. Crofton introduced me to the ideas of free market economics, which prepared me for a summer seminar at Clemson University hosted by the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE). Because of that seminar, I interned with FEE in the summer of 2017. Dr. Crofton also helped me enter an “Atlas Shrugged” Essay Contest, and I became a semi-finalist. During this past year, she was a tremendous help when I was preparing graduate school applications, and she even took the time to write recommendation letters for my applications.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “One of my most impactful moments at High Point University was when I was applying for fellowships and graduate schools. I was sitting in Dr. Meredith Malburne-Wade’s office for what felt like the millionth time as we were editing my scholarship essays. She could tell I looked defeated and exhausted from the process and she looked at me and said, ‘Maddie, I know this is hard, and I can tell you don’t feel confident or worthy of these scholarships, but you are.’”
Advice for underclassmen: “It is important to remain positive and to keep your goals in sight. While others might try to influence your decisions, stay true to yourself and do what you believe is best for you.”
