Students Present Innovative Research at Sixth Annual Symposium

HIGH POINT, N.C., April 11, 2018 – High Point University’s Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Works continued their tradition of showcasing HPU students’ research projects at the sixth annual Research and Creativity Symposium (High-PURCS). This event brought together more than 160 students from over 20 fields to present research to fellow students, faculty and staff.

The projects that students presented covered a vast array of topics including social media marketing, the Negro National League, designing accessible videogames and more. They presented their research as scholars in oral, poster and theater presentations, as well as an art exhibition.

“This conference is an opportunity for students to showcase their work here on campus so HPU students, faculty and staff can witness their professional development and gain a glimpse of tomorrow’s future leaders, artists, writers, scientists, teachers and scholars,” said Dr. Joanne Altman, director of Undergraduate Research and Creative Works. “These projects are also the springboard for our students to careers. The high-impact practice of Undergraduate Research and Creative Works helps students develop those critical skills needed for graduate and professional schools, and what top employers are looking for.”

Three research awards were presented during the symposium. Hannah Lee Dixon won best digital poster award for her project titled, “The Mechanism of IB-DNQ-Induced Cell Death in NQO1 Positive BRCA2-Mutant Breast Cancer Cells.” Kyra Gillard won best digital oral presentation for her project titled, “Identification of a pharmacophore capable of potentiating B-lactam antibiotics in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).” Julia Debeka was awarded the Scholarly Interdisciplinary Research Grant, also known as the SIRG Award, for her project titled, “Effect of surface micro-patterns on biofilm formation by Staphylococcus Aureus.”

As part of the symposium, a poster session is held in the Slane Center. There, Kayla Barry and Mariana Pereira presented their project titled, “Are Millennials Immune To Advertising?: A Quantitative Study Of A Generation’s Awareness Of Marketing.” Their project investigates Millennials’ interactions with social media advertising. Contrary to popular belief, their research has found that this is not the best way to reach Millennial consumers.

People using social media looked at it as a way to relax and socialize. We found that when users saw an ad, they felt that it was intrusive and often annoying, so they tend to ignore them,” says Barry. “However, with influencers, like lifestyle brands, social media viewers saw them as friends that they follow. As a result, ads from these accounts were more likely to be viewed rather than ignored.”

According to their advisor, Phil Watson, assistant professor of the practice of communication, their project explores the idea that Milleinnials go to social media to “socialize” and consider ads to be communication they instinctively or habitually ignore, or in some cases consider an annoying intrusion.

“Kayla Barry and Mariana Pereira are diligent young women, and I agreed to by their research advisor because we shared a skepticism of advertising effectiveness on social media, especially Facebook,” says Watson. “What makes their study interesting to me is that it challenges the effectiveness of paid ads on social media. Given recent events, it also makes me wonder whether Facebook and others are really making their money selling data lists made up of personal information that their users are unaware they’re dispensing.”
