HIGH POINT, N.C., May 4, 2018 – High Point University will host approximately 10,000 visitors during Commencement Weekend, May 4-5. The annual event is a time for HPU students and families to celebrate the academic achievements of more than 1,000 graduates and experience offerings throughout the city of High Point.
This year’s Commencement ceremony will honor HPU’s largest graduating class in the school’s history, increasing the number of visitors.
“HPU’s Commencement weekend brings a substantial economic boost for the city of High Point. We welcome 10,000 visitors, generating an estimated $3,213,434.02 in economic impact for the city,” says Tim Mabe, president and CEO of High Point Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Not only do these families come for this weekend, but most of them come throughout the year for other activities, which is great for High Point. The hospitality and local businesses rely on this traffic, and we hope that at the end of the weekend they are just as impressed with the city as they are with the university.”
Local businesses, including restaurants, shops and hotels, see an increase in traffic during HPU’s annual events and look forward to serving the families attending. High Point restaurant 98 Asian Bistro, usually only open for Saturday dinner, will also open its doors for lunch to welcome the crowds brought by Commencement. The economic impact of the university, $500 million annually, is a vital source for businesses in the city.
“We always look forward to welcoming guests from High Point University during this weekend and throughout the year,” says Kenneth Lile, general manager of Courtyard Marriott. “The Marriott Team highly values the partnership we’ve built with High Point University over the years, and the HPU families have become part of our largest customer-base. We join with the entire High Point community in celebrating the 2018 graduating class and wish them all future success in business and in life.”
