HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 25, 2018 – Election Day is right around the corner and some High Point University students sat in on a live interview between Dr. Brandon Lenoir, HPU’s assistant professor of strategic communication, and Bob Buckley, Fox 8 anchor and senior reporter.
Lenoir was invited to discuss the state legislature ahead of Election Day. Lenoir has appeared on Election Day coverage specials before and wanted his students to see the process before going live in the studio.
“The focus of strategic communication and political science is to give our students experiential learning opportunities,” said Lenoir. “Taking the lessons out of the classroom and into the real-world helps the students apply the information discussed during our lectures.”
Among the students was Julia Fiedler, an HPU communication major.
“We talk about the media all the time in our classes, but it is a special experience to see it in person,” said Fiedler. “My favorite part of visiting the station was seeing how much of what Dr. Lenoir talked about on-air overlapped with what we have talked about in class.”
After the live interview, Lenoir’s students took a tour of the newsroom.
“My favorite part of the tour was getting to see how everything fits together,” said Alyssa Moylan, an HPU communication major. “It was interesting watching the news stories go from being pulled off the computer, edited, added to the rundown and finally, watching it come up on the teleprompter for the anchors to read.”
Lenoir will be taking another group of students to Fox 8’s studio on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
