HPU’s Civitan Club Collects Items for Those Affected by Hurricane Florence

HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 3, 2018 – High Point University’s Civitan Club was busy packing hygiene kits on Oct. 1 for those affected by Hurricane Florence.

Mikayla Labbe, HPU’s Civitan Club co-president, sorts through toiletries before she packs them into hygiene kits for those directly impacted by Hurricane Florence.

The toiletry items and cleaning supplies were donated to HPU by Sunnybrook Church in Bristol, Tennessee, and at this year’s CROP Hunger Walk where HPU students volunteered. Members of the club packed more than 400 hygiene kits that include a toothbrush, soap, hand towel and other necessities.

Their efforts reflect the university’s overall commitment to assisting people affected by the hurricane. HPU recently presented a $30,000 donation to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Florence relief.

“I love serving, that’s why I wanted to be on the board and wanted to be co-president of this club because we do a lot of great service projects,” said Mikayla Labbe, Civitan Club’s co-president. “This one is especially helpful because we can really do good for a community that was really directly affected.”

Dr. Daniel Hall, Chair of HPU’s Department of Economics, has been the faculty advisor for Civitan Club since 2011.

“I’ve seen students grow up and pursue great job opportunities because of the experience service has provided them,” said Hall. “In many ways, it fulfills what I want to accomplish as a professor, and that is to help students grow and to help make the world a better place.”

Hall is working with Church World Service to get the kits to the hardest hit areas. The organization has already donated 13,000 hygiene kits but is in need of more.
