Students Build Beds for Veterans

HPU junior Kaylor Ramey, co-founder of Bed Brigade, hosted “Build for the Brave” on Nov. 17. HPU students helped build bed frames, bed legs and painted logos on the beds that were donated to Patriots at the Beach, which is an organization located in South Carolina.

HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 20, 2018 – High Point University students came out in big numbers on Nov. 17 for this year’s “Build for the Brave” event.

HPU students built 75 beds at this year’s “Build for the Brave” event hosted by Bed Brigade.

The Bed Brigade hosted the event and built 75 beds for Patriots at the Beach, which is an organization located in South Carolina and run by Clebe McClary, a Vietnam War veteran.

Students worked together to construct bed frames, bed legs, painted logos on beds, sorted donations, and wrote letters to veterans.

Kaylor Ramey, HPU junior and co-founder of Bed Brigade, says it’s always rewarding to see her colleagues come together for this event.

“I am overwhelmed at the amount of support shown by High Point University students and the members of the High Point community,” said Ramey. “More than 100 volunteers came out to help. Together we stand, so those who served can rest.”

Ramey explains that she and her father created the Bed Brigade, a nonprofit, when she was 12 years old. They began partnering with local churches to help fill the need for beds in the Central Ohio area. Today, they’ve expanded to several branches throughout the country, including High Point.
