Students Collaborate to Help Local Veterans

HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 5, 2018 – Students at High Point University have teamed up to help local veterans get a good night’s sleep by building 75 beds.

The Bed Brigade will host the “Build for the Brave” event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 17 in the lower parking lot at the Millis Athletic and Convocation Center. The beds will be donated to Patriots at the Beach, which is an organization located in South Carolina and run by Clebe McClary, a Vietnam War veteran.

Kaylor Ramey, HPU junior and co-founder of Bed Brigade, says the group has pledged to build and donate 75 beds to the camp – and it won’t be easy. Ramey says students will work together to construct bed frames, bed legs, paint logos on beds, sort donations, and they’ll also write letters to veterans.

Ramey explains that she and her father created the Bed Brigade, a nonprofit, when she was 12 years old. They began partnering with local churches to help fill the need for beds in the Central Ohio area. Today, they’ve expanded to several branches throughout the country, including High Point.

“The event is to build beds for homeless veteran shelters,” said Ramey. “We stand so they can rest. It’s really about providing dignity to those who served and letting them know we are thankful.”

In addition to constructing beds, the event is also asking for donations of twin bed sheets, pillows, books, canned food and personal care items; monetary donations are also welcome. Items will be collected at the event, as well as the following locations:

— DeBeen Espresso at 709 W. Lexington Ave., High Point

— Shinko Grill at 1231 Eastchester Drive #111, High Point

— Barberitos at 1231 Eastchester Drive #118, High Point

— University Kitchen at 2004 N. Main St., High Point
