HPU’s Corporate Educator in Residence Scott McKain Mentors Students

High Point University President Nido Qubein interviewed Scott McKain, HPU’s Corporate Educator in Residence, for a program that will be aired on UNC-TV at a later date.

HIGH POINT, N.C., March 1, 2019 – Today, High Point University students networked with and gained executive leadership development skills from Scott McKain, accomplished business consultant, trainer and HPU’s Corporate Educator in Residence.

McKain met with HPU sales students for several speed sessions during his visit.

“One of the most spectacular things about HPU is how engaged and insightful the students are, and that is because the university is equipping them with life skills,” said McKain. “What these students bring to the table is wisdom and insight combined with enthusiasm and commitment. That can really make a difference in organizations in the U.S. and around the world.”

Throughout the day, McKain met with students for different speed sessions. He coached a group of sales students in Cottrell Hall and shared experiences from how he became interested in sales to how he became a corporate trainer for Apple, Chrysler and Sysco.

McKain shared a plethora of knowledge when it comes to selling oneself, appealing to the customer and building personal relationships with clients. These are key lessons HPU student Olivia Royce learned from McKain.

Royce is a junior sales major and French minor. She says humility is a trait that became very important to her after learning it in her HPU sales class.

“I agree whole-heartedly on his philosophy on professional sales,” said Royce. “It’s really encouraging that we have somebody who’s willing to invest in us as students and also help us become better people and better professionals.”

Logan Kamer is a business administration major and sales minor. He sat next to McKain, where he learned new things outside of his classroom.

McKain walks with HPU’s Juliette Holm, a sophomore business administration major and sales minor.

“HPU is amazing because we have innovators like Mr. McKain and other mentors who visit, providing experiences beyond the classroom,” said Kamer. “Mr. McKain was able to offer different perspectives on things I never thought of before, like how sales involves every aspect of your life, such as selling yourself in relationships.”

Juliette Holm is a sophomore also majoring in business administration and minoring in sales. She too was able to relate to McKain during his visit.

“He very much emphasizes not being the ‘stereotypical sales person.’ I am the type of person who tries to build off of connections, which is why the sales program here helps me.”

McKain emphasized to students that being humble and holding onto values will help guide them through any career path they choose.

“Have a strong sense of your personal values and remember where you came from,” said McKain. “One of the things that excites me so much about the millennial generation and students today is the sense that what they do can make a difference in the world.”
