Students Host Special Pops Halloween Dance for Community Members

HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 31, 2019 – There were tricks, treats and a packed dance floor at this year’s Special Populations Halloween Dance at Morehead Recreation Center. The event was organized by High Point University’s Student Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC), where individuals with disabilities dressed in costumes and enjoyed a community dance on Oct. 29.

High Point Parks and Recreation co-hosted the event with the SCEC. Participants and their family members enjoyed games, dancing, crafts and food in numerous Halloween-themed rooms.

“It’s a great time for everyone to express themselves in a fun and safe environment,” said Rebecca Magod, chair of HPU’s Halloween Special Pops Dance. “It’s been wonderful to be a part of SCEC that encourages inclusivity. Our professor, Teresa Owens, is the driving force behind inspiring us at HPU. Having her as a mentor and a teacher has been great.”

Angela Idol is Bradley Ester’s mother and they make sure to participate every year.

“It’s like a big family reunion when we come together,” said Idol. “Over the years, I’ve gotten to know all the participants. Tonight is a family reunion, and everyone has a blast. I think it’s so awesome HPU’s SCEC does this each year.”

The SCEC is also planning Christmas and Valentine’s Day celebrations for the coming months, which will include similar activities that bring community members together.
