With another Commencement behind us, High Point University graduates will be commencing prestigious career paths around the world at Fortune 500 companies, international service programs, public school systems, top-tier law, medical and graduate school programs, and many other esteemed organizations thanks to their journey at HPU. Here’s a glimpse of one extraordinary member of the Class of 2021:
Name: Maria Parks
Hometown: Saratoga, New York
Major: Exercise science
Post-graduation plans: Parks will be attending Russell Sage College to pursue a master’s in nutrition and dietetics.
How HPU helped you get there: “Throughout my four years at HPU, I learned and grew from the best professors. The faculty was extremely supportive and always wanted the best for their students. My professors and the Office of Career & Professional Development set me up for success, which led to my acceptance into Russell Sage’s M.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics Program. Emily Long in the Office of Career and Professional Development helped me prepare my official resume and guided me through writing my personal statement. Her guidance made applying for graduate school less stressful and more exciting.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Dr. Vaughan inspired me through his leadership style. I greatly enjoyed and benefited from the two courses I took with him; analysis and critique and sports nutrition. Dr. Vaughan’s guidance during my senior year motivated me to purse a path in nutrition and dietetics. He is easily approachable and always there to help. His passion for nutrition and caring attitude inspired me everyday to want to show up to class and give my best effort. I continue to use the skills and knowledge I obtained from Dr. Vaughan’s courses in my current education and future as a registered dietitian.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “My most impactful moment at HPU was having the opportunities to explore different fields within my major. Through the strong support system HPU provides, I was able to find my true passion and pursue my goal of becoming a registered dietician.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Establish good connections and relationships with your professors. Volunteer and participate in opportunities that come your way. Stay involved!”
