The Best of 2021: An HPU Year in Review

As 2022 approaches, HPU pauses to reflect on this past year, the families and friends we welcomed to campus, and the milestone events that made this year so memorable. As always, HPU is thankful for our students, parents, alumni and friends for their continued advocacy, which allowed the university to move onward and upward in 2021. In the last year, HPU achieved several academic milestones while also furthering campus expansion plans. Students continued to receive unprecedented access to innovators on the HPU campus, and the university’s distinguished learning model was recognized for excellence.

Below is a glimpse of High Point University’s top 21 moments from 2021:

Grand Opening of the Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center and Jana and Ken Kahn Hotel
After lots of anticipation, the Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center and Jana and Ken Kahn Hotel, a mammoth complex on the HPU campus, opened its doors in September with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. Less than two months later, the arena witnessed its first Panther win when HPU Men's Basketball stormed the court and kicked off their historic season in front of a packed arena audience.

HPU Move In Day 4
Largest Enrollment in HPU History!
HPU’s August move-in was the biggest yet. 1,550 new Panthers were welcomed home during Move-In Weekend, becoming HPU’s largest freshman class to date. The Welcome Week crew included hundreds of upperclassmen, faculty and staff volunteers who greeted the freshmen and their families and moved their items into their residence hall. 2021 also marked the largest total enrollment overall for High Point University at 5,850 students.

HPU US News Best Regional College
HPU Ranks #1 Again
A decade of distinction! For the 10th consecutive year, High Point University has been named No. 1 Best Regional College in the South by U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Colleges.” HPU has also been named No. 1 Most Innovative for the seventh consecutive year.

School of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Announced
HPU's transformation continues! In May, HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein, announced the university’s future dental school. The $150 million investment will be North Carolina’s only dental school at a private university and the 10th academic school on HPU’s campus.

HPU’s Access to Innovator Program Continues to Grow
HPU’s list of global leaders expanded X5 this year. High Point University welcomed: - Russell Weiner, Domino's COO and president and HPU's Corporate Executive in Residence - John Maxwell, bestselling author, leadership expert and HPU’s Executive Coach in Residence - Dee Ann Turner, former vice president of talent at Chick-fil-A and HPU's Talent Acquisition Expert in Residence - William “Bill” E. Kennard, current chairman of At&T's Board of Directors, former U.S. ambassador and chairman of the FCC, and HPU's Global Leader in Residence - Ben Owen III, American studio potter and HPU's Artist in Residence Throughout the year, students also enjoyed one-on-one moments with John Maxwell, Dee Ann Turner, Russell Weiner and industry leaders like Cynt Marshall, Dallas Mavericks CEO and HPU’s Sports Executive in Residence; Dean Cain, famed actor, producer, television producer and HPU’s Actor in Residence; plus more! Looking ahead, students can get excited for days spent with Marc Randolph, Netflix co-founder and HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence, who is back on campus Jan. 30-31 and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence, who returns to campus Feb. 13-14.

Celebrated Class of 2020 and 2021 with TWO Commencement Ceremonies
May Commencement was twice as nice! In addition to watching 2021 graduates cross the stage, HPU welcomed back the Class of 2020 to celebrate their extraordinary achievements. Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynt Marshall delivered both Commencement addresses.

Class of 2020 Earned a 97% Outcome Rating
February found success. Research reports that HPU’s Class of 2020 earned a 97% career or graduate school placement within six months of graduation. Even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the university remained committed to students’ success after graduation.

Bob Brown Scholarship 1
Bob Brown Scholarship Announced
In September, the establishment of the Dr. Robert “Bob” Brown Endowed Scholarship was announced. High Point University President Dr. Nido Qubein and Coca-Cola Consolidated Chairman and CEO Frank Harrison, along with business associates and friends of Dr. Brown, contributed $3 million to the scholarship to honor his legacy. Brown is a local philanthropist, entrepreneur and the chairman of the Board of Trustees at HPU. He holds 11 honorary doctorate degrees from various colleges and universities and has been recognized with six national achievement awards, including being selected as a member of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. He was also a special assistant to President Nixon and an advisor to each succeeding president. Annually, the fund will provide between eight to 10 scholarships to minority students who attend HPU.

2022 Commencement Speaker Announced
HPU announced that Daniel Lubetzky, founder of KIND snacks, will deliver the Class of 2022 Commencement address in the spring. Lubetzky joins an extraordinary lineup of past Commencement speakers that include including Cynt Marshall, CEO of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and HPU Sports Executive In Residence; Dr. Michio Kaku, physicist and co-founder of String Field Theory; Josh Groban, internationally acclaimed singer, songwriter and actor; Wolf Blitzer, CNN’s lead political anchor and anchor of “The Situation Room”; Condoleezza Rice, former secretary of state; Gen. Colin Powell, former secretary of state, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and national security advisor; Laura Bush, former first lady; Clarence Thomas, supreme court justice; Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple and HPU’s Innovator in Residence; Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor; Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan; Dr. Buzz Aldrin, NASA astronaut; and Muhtar Kent, CEO of the Coca-Cola Company. He will deliver his address to graduates and their families on May 7, 2022. While Commencement is a private event for HPU graduates and their family members, it will be streamed live online at www.highpoint.edu/live.

Freshman Bike Build Donation
Giving back begins your first day at Hight Point University. HPU’s freshman class experienced HPU's values-based education in action! As a team building experience, students worked through the challenge of assembling 180 bicycles and then surprised local elementary students from Montlieu Academy by gifting them the bikes.

Nursing Department Chair Announced
New program. New faculty! In February, Dr. Racquel Ingram was announced the founding chair of the Department of Nursing. Ingram is leading the charge as HPU intends to welcome its inaugural nursing class in fall 2022. These students will benefit from Ingram’s 24 years of nursing expertise, which includes serving as a member of the North Carolina Board of Nursing, specifically as a BSN/higher degree nurse educator.

Major Concerts on Campus
Throughout the year, HPU hosted concerts with famous bands and artists such as Train, who performed during Family Weekend and the grand opening of the Qubein Arena. Students also enjoyed the annual fall concert on Roberts Hall Lawn, featuring performances by Bryce Vine and Cassadee Pope.

Plans for New Library
HPU announced in February construction plans for a new $80 million library that will provide ample study space for students and house a new Admissions Center. The facility is expected to be completed in 2024, which will be HPU’s 100th anniversary.

It was a historic year for HPU Athletics as Women’s Basketball, Men’s Lacrosse, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Lacrosse, Volleyball, and Track and Field punched their tickets to their respective NCAA Tournaments

Exciting Winter Additions & Activities
HPU welcomed students back to campus in January with the addition of the HPU Ice Skating Rink, Igloos — covered domes over popular seating areas on campus — and fire pits spread out around campus!

HPU Honors First Responders During Drive-Through Dinner
Local first responders and frontline workers received a warm “thank you” from the HPU family at a drive-through dinner event. Law enforcement, hospital staff, public health workers and more were invited to campus where they received complimentary food, a T-shirt and messages of gratitude from HPU students who volunteered.

Caine Conservatory Dedication 1
Caine Conservatory Dedication
The beautiful Caine Conservatory, completed in spring 2020, was officially dedicated in honor of Don and Teresa Caine with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The facility is named after the longtime Triad family, who generously gave a major gift in support of the new conservatory. The conservatory is an inspiring place for students, faculty and staff, as well as a building for academic excellence.

HPU’s 11th Annual Veterans Day Celebration Welcomes 1,200
HPU values veterans and their service to our country. More than 1,200 veterans and their families arrived to campus for the annual HPU Veterans Day Celebration in November. The celebration, made possible by 100 student, faculty and staff volunteers, included a complimentary breakfast, a patriotic salute, the revealing of two track chairs that HPU fraternity Kappa Alpha raised $40,000 to purchase, and much more.

HPU Princeton Review 1
The Princeton Review Loves HPU!
Recognized for excellence, the Princeton Review once again recommends High Point University as one of the best institutions for undergraduate education in America. This was the fifth consecutive year HPU has been recognized. Only about 14% of America’s 2,700 four-year colleges are included in the 2022 edition. The Princeton Review selects colleges based on data it annually collects from administrators, as well as surveys from students at those colleges.

National ABC Christmas Special
Christmas came early for students involved in the production of HPU’s “A Serenade for Shepherds” which was filmed on HPU’s campus in October. The special features scripture readings, prayers and performances by members of the High Point University community and students. “A Serenade for Shepherds” was aired on ABC affiliated stations on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The Annual Christmas Drive Welcomes Thousands
Making the holiday season brighter, HPU has expanded this year’s holiday drive with new lights, decorations and campus facilities. Members of the community are invited to enjoy this drive-through event through Jan. 1, 2022.
