Post-graduation plans: Voelpel joined Gartner as a business development associate in Fort Myers, Florida. He uses strategic thinking and relationship building to solve the most pressing business challenges impacting Fortune 500 companies.
How HPU helped you get there: “HPU instilled the drive in me to leave my comfort zone and try new things. Whether taking a negotiations course with Professor Larry Quinn, chair of the marketing and sales department, or accepting a summer marketing internship with a professional ice hockey team, I never felt out of place. Encouraging myself to enter new regions of the business world is one of the many things I learned while at HPU. I used the Office of Career and Professional Development to strengthen my personal branding. I often stopped in to improve my resume, cover letter and emails to thank interviewers.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “Joining organizations on campus helped me find my calling. Being a part of the professional business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi taught me how to present myself professionally and showcase my talents efficiently. The Peer Mentor Program helped me discover my love for mentorship. The Senior Leadership Cabinet helped prepare me for my current position in clientele acquisition and cold calling. All these organizations were pieces to my career that HPU helped put together over my four years.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “HPU teaches students to reach for the stars from day one. Every member of the faculty, staff, administration and student body is in your corner. Nothing is impossible when you have perseverance.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “Coachability and professionalism are two virtues I learned at HPU. Being open to accepting feedback, and then implementing it into your work ethic is crucial for success. In addition, presenting yourself to the best of your ability and holding yourself to a higher standard will lead to impactful results.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Never enter a room assuming one person is the smartest. Every person in the room has something to offer and learn. Embrace feedback with an open mind and implement it. Humility is an under-appreciated quality of character.”
