The new dental school has appointed 12 members to the inaugural Board of Advisors.
HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 17, 2023 – High Point University’s Workman School of Dental Medicine has appointed a dozen members to its inaugural Board of Advisors. Their terms will continue through 2025.
HPU will welcome its first class of students to the Workman School of Dental Medicine, North Carolina’s only private dental school, in the fall of 2024.
Board members provide voluntary leadership and agree to maintain a standing charge to embrace the school’s overall vision to discover, develop and deliver better health, says Dr. Scott S. De Rossi, founding dean of the Workman School of Dental Medicine. Selected for their commitment, expertise and diversity of backgrounds, each board member provides insights and ideas to the school’s leadership while serving as a global ambassador by creating strategic connections and communicating the school’s strengths and needed resources.
“High Point University’s Workman School of Dental Medicine is blessed to have these dental innovators and thought leaders join forces as we build a unique learning model for one of the nation’s most distinctive dental schools,” says De Rossi. “We’re creating a health care network that will allow HPU students to get the best dental education in the United States.”

This impressive group includes Dr. Rick Workman, HPU’s Dental Innovator in Residence and the founder of Heartland Dental, which supports more than 1,600 dental offices nationwide. The Workman School of Dental Medicine was supported by a $32 million donation from the Rick and Angie Workman Foundation in the spring of 2022.
Dr. Workman opened his first dental office in 1980 in Effingham, Illinois, the birthplace of Heartland Dental. He opened a second office 15 months later. Pursuing his passion for dentistry required 55 hours a week of delivering dental care and an additional 30 hours on the business side of operations. Knowing there had to be a better way for himself and future dentists to practice, Workman introduced other dentists in 1982 to the potential opportunities of high quality, nonclinical administrative support and crafted Heartland Dental into a world-class dental support organization. Today, Heartland Dental provides support to more than 2,600 dentists. Workman continues to be actively involved as executive chairman of Heartland Dental. He devotes himself to the dental industry through providing mentorship, leadership advice and speaking engagements.
