“HPU’s focus on hands-on learning is what helped prepare me the most for my post-graduate career. I gained valuable experience in the classroom and through my extracurricular activities and internships. HPU’s professors cared about me and wanted to see me succeed. The Office of Career and Professional Development helped me with my resume. I also participated in mock interviews, which helped me feel comfortable during my interview with the Islanders.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU:
“My most impactful mentor at HPU was Kenneth Medlin, professor of the practice of journalism. He helped me tremendously both inside and outside the classroom. I visited his office regularly to discuss applying for jobs and receive feedback on my work. Without Professor Medlin’s advice and guidance, I would not be in the position I am in today.”
Most impactful moment at HPU:
“My most impactful moment was when I commentated my first sports game on ESPN+ last year. I was always nervous to be on air and call games, but with the support of my friends and mentors at HPU, I had the courage to seize the opportunity.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success?
“I felt so lucky to be at HPU every single day. HPU encourages students to strive for success and be the best versions of themselves every day. HPU’s beautiful campus and admirable values were two of the reasons I knew it was the right fit for me.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success?
“HPU emphasized the importance of networking and making a lasting first impression. HPU taught me how to sell myself and use my strengths to my advantage. Working internships and gaining valuable real-life experience in the sports media field helped me land my dream job.”
Advice for underclassmen:
“Get involved! Join clubs and organizations that interest you and will help you gain real-world experience. Make connections and apply to internships and jobs early.”
