HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 17, 2023 – High Point University student Caitlin Black, a junior double majoring in dance and computer science with a concentration in cybersecurity, was awarded the inaugural Brigadier General Norman C. Gaddis Leadership Award at HPU’s annual Veterans Day Celebration on Nov. 10.
The Gaddis Leadership Award is presented to an HPU upperclassman who exemplifies the leadership and character qualities exhibited in the U.S. military. The award was established in September 2022 by HPU alumna Dr. Mary Jo Hall and her husband, retired Col. Emmett E. “Jay” Stobbs Jr., to honor Gaddis. He was a distinguished U.S. Air Force officer and fighter pilot who served in World War II and the Korean War before being held as a prisoner of war for 2,124 days during the Vietnam War.
“Supporting the military and veterans’ initiative is an excellent way to help HPU reinforce itself as a God, family and country university,” Hall said. “Besides honoring the patriotism and service of military members, veterans and their families, the annual Brigadier General Norman C. Gaddis Leadership Award recognizes students who are building and demonstrating character-based leadership qualities, such as personal initiative, faith and gratitude by learning with and from these patriots.”

“HPU students consistently showcase that our university cultivates leaders devoted to service and global transformation,” said HPU President Nido Qubein. “The finalists for the Gaddis Leadership Award exemplify this commitment. Caitlin Black stands out for her academic excellence and embodiment of true leadership. These exceptional traits reflect the core values that M.J. and Emmett sought to recognize through this award.”
Black, who is from High Point, was recognized for her exceptional leadership and commitment to excellence. She is a Presidential Scholar and member of the HPU Scholars Program. Since 2022, she has served as an HPU University Ambassador, utilizing her strong interpersonal skills to represent the university with distinction. She also contributes as an Honor Ambassador, organizing events that foster community among her peers. As the Student Government Association’s vice president of academic affairs and campus engagement, she leads initiatives to enrich both academic experiences and campus involvement. Additionally, Black is a member of the Student Justice Conduct Board, helping to uphold fairness and integrity within the university community.
As a member of the HPU dance team, Black balances her athletic and academic commitments as a Millis Scholar-Athlete. Her dedication has earned her academic achievement awards from HPU’s Department of Theatre and Dance. She is also a member of the National Honor Society for Dance and Alpha Lambda Delta honor society. She received the Girl Scout Gold Award, which recognized her for her dedication to leadership and community service.
HPU seniors Jonathan Hahn and Megan Hovey were named finalists for the Gaddis Leadership Award. Along with Black, they received a monetary award and a military challenge coin for demonstrating academic excellence and leadership in their community. The coins recognized their accomplishments, patriotism and leadership.
Hahn, a U.S. Army ROTC cadet majoring in business administration and minoring in finance, received the Military Officers Association of America’s North Carolina Cadet of the Year award. He was named a U.S. Army LINE Scholar and won first place in the Massachusetts State Robotics Collaborate Competition.
Hovey, a sports media major with a minor in social media marketing, is a Presidential Scholar, a recipient of the 2022-23 Extraordinary Leader award, Senior Leadership Cabinet member and an active participant on the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication Student Advisory Board. She is also the head University Ambassador captain, leading a team of six University Ambassadors.
