HIGH POINT, N.C., Nov. 1, 2023 – High Point University will present its annual Gunther E. Rothenberg Seminar in Military History from 9:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4. The event will be held in Couch Hall 206 and is open to the public.
Named for world-renowned military historian Gunther E. Rothenberg, the seminar is a tribute to his scholarship and dedication to the field of military history. The HPU Department of History sponsors the event, which offers a different theme each year and features leading scholars discussing their recent research and interpretations.
This year’s event will feature three scholars for the theme of “Warfare in the Medieval and Early Modern Mediterranean.” Dr. Kelly DeVries, a visiting professor of the U.S. Air Force Academy, a professor at Loyola University in Maryland and an honorary historical consultant at the Royal Armories, will present “Medieval Militia.” Dr. Clifford J. Rogers, a history professor and co-director of the Digital History Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, will present “Calvary in Battle in Medieval Europe,” with a focus on Italy in 1000-1300. Dr. David Alan Parnell, an associate history professor at Indiana University Northwest, will present “Belisarius: The Promise and Peril of Trusting Subordinate Officers in Battle.”
“Their papers serve as a point of departure for extensive discussion and debate of the subject matter,” said Dr. Andrew Tzavaras, an instructor of history and coordinator of HPU’s Secondary History Program. “This is an opportunity for the HPU community to gain mentorship and access to innovators in the field of military studies and other realms of expertise represented by our esteemed guest presenters.”
