How HPU helped you get there: “HPU’s inspiring environment has significantly contributed to my success by providing access to dedicated professors from the sales and communications departments. Their encouragement to engage in real-world experiences allowed me to step outside my comfort zone and interact with diverse individuals in various settings outside of campus including sales competitions in Chicago and Orlando. This hands-on approach not only enhanced my practical skills but also built my confidence, preparing me effectively for my upcoming job as a field adjuster.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “My most impactful mentor at HPU was my advisor, Larry Quinn, Chair of the Department of Sales. He taught me the importance of confidence and how to stand up for myself during the interview process, which has been crucial in achieving my goals. His guidance helped me understand the value of effective networking, equipping me with the skills needed to thrive in a professional environment and succeed within a company.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “My most impactful moment at HPU was working with a group of students on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., where we advocated to Congress about mental health and job reintegration for PTSD veterans. This experience was especially meaningful to me as my great-grandfather was a casualty in World War II. HPU’s strong emphasis on patriotism and supporting those who serve our country resonated deeply with me, making this advocacy work not only a personal mission but also a reflection of the university’s values.”
How you used Career & Professional Development? “I actively utilized HPU’s Office of Career & Professional Development to enhance my job readiness. They helped me structure my resume effectively, ensuring it highlighted my skills and experiences clearly. Additionally, participating in mock interview sessions provided valuable practice and feedback, boosting my confidence. I also refined my LinkedIn profile with their guidance, optimizing it to showcase my professional brand and connect with potential employers.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “High Point University instilled in me values such as community engagement and the importance of patriotism and service, particularly through my experience with Habitat for Humanity, where I helped build a house for a veteran. This experience reinforced the virtue of compassion and the significance of giving back, which aligns with HPU’s mission to foster a strong sense of community. Additionally, the university emphasized the importance of networking and personal branding, equipping me with the skills to cultivate meaningful connections that I will carry into my future endeavors.”
Advice for underclassmen: “My advice for underclassmen is to get involved as much as possible and not wait until your senior year, like I did. Explore several industries and your passions early to take advantage of opportunities that align with them. Additionally, prioritize networking — both within HPU and beyond. Building connections can open doors and provide valuable insights, setting you up for success after graduation. Embrace every opportunity to grow and learn.”
