Name:   Reagan Smith, Class of 2024

Hometown:  Burlington, NC

Major: Sports Media

Post-graduation plans:  Reagan will be continuing her education at High Point University after graduation. She will be pursuing High Point’s Master’s Program in Communications and Business Leadership.

How HPU helped you get there: “HPU has provided me with amazing opportunities to help me perfect my art. I used to struggle with public speaking but now I broadcast on student radio and ESPN+. HPU has helped me get out of my comfort zone and grew my desire to learn as well as get more involved within the school of communication.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU:  “Dr. Bobby Hayes — Chair and Professor of the Practice of Journalism, Kenneth Medlin — Professor of the Practice of Journalism, and Joe Michaels — Professor of the Practice of Media Production, have helped sculpt me into the reporter, broadcaster and director I am today. They have given me the constructive criticism I needed to grow and perfect my art in sports. They have cared for me so much these past years and because of them, I have the ability to go into the industry and thrive.”

Most impactful moment at HPU:  “The most impactful moment at HPU was when I got hand-picked to be part of the live pre-game show for the Big South Tournament. It helped prepare me for going out in the industry and for the complications that may come along with it. Although it was a lot of work, it was so much fun and I fell in love with the grind as well as the preparation leading up to the event.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success?  “HPU, specifically the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication, has helped me develop relationships with organizations and people I never thought I would be able to speak to. I have formed connections that no one else would get unless they were at HPU and that is all thanks to the School of Communication.”

Advice for underclassmen:  “Work hard and don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. I know it’s cliché and it’s something you hear all the time, but sometimes it’s the cliché things that help you push through life. It’s helped me throughout my time here, and it will continue to help me when I enter the workforce.”
